About Me

About Me

Miriam Gehler, BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), MBACP (Accred), MBPsS

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist with over 20 years experience, qualified both professionally and academically and fully accredited with British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy as well as a member of the British Psychological Society.  Over the years I have worked in specialist organisations and private practice dealing with all ages from teenagers upwards. This encompasses clients with difficulties in a wide range of issues, including bereavement, anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma and marital and relationship problems.

I am also a trained and experienced group-therapy facilitator.  Group work can provide a safe way to  meet  others in similar circumstances when individual counselling can seem too daunting.  This is a powerful way to gain support and validation.

My approach is to work together with the client in a collaborative way, to enable and empower meaningful change in their life.

I work within the ethical framework of the BACP, which ensures  the strictest level of confidence.

DRB checked and fully insured.

Registered with BUPA – this means that if there is G.P. referral, costs will be covered by BUPA.

COVID-19:  I am currently working with Skype or Zoom

About Therapy

How can I help you?

Start curious. Become brave.

Therapy is a process to look at how you interact with the world and why you behave the way you do.

Life and relationships are often hard work, but with the right counselling, you will have the autonomy and courage to believe in yourself.  The aim is to help you examine your default way of thinking, feeling and behaving and to explore where and how these were created. This will encourage you to have the confidence to make changes and embrace an opportunity to live your life in a more fulfilling and genuine way.  I believe in working together with you and empowering you so that you are in the best possible place to make effective changes in your life. For good.

The shared success of a therapeutic alliance is the client leaving with a newly discovered understanding and belief in themselves.  Therapy is not the therapist taking control and giving instructions.  Rather, it is a shared journey of enabling an individual to create new pathways to achieving tangible outcomes.

I provide a warm place of safety and trust where you will feel supported through this process.

How I Work

There is no set amount of sessions. The first session(s) will include a general assessment and will give us both an opportunity to meet and get a sense of whether we will be comfortable working together and a chance for you to ask me any questions.  There is no obligation to continue after the first session and you will be free to terminate at any point in the process with due notice. Some work is more suited to short-term goal focussed counselling whilst sometimes more detailed work is appropriate.

The counselling process will include periodical checking to ascertain that we are progressing towards the desired outcome and usually ends at a mutually agreed point. I work with an integrated approach to counselling, which could be person-centred, psychodynamic, or utilising CBT concepts or any combination of these.
